In this course we will introduce the fundamental principles of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in humanitarian action, emphasizing why DEI is a life-saving approach rather than just a quality marker. Participants will explore key concepts such as intersectionality, equity vs equality, and barriers to inclusion in crisis contexts.

Additionally, the session will provide an overview of practical tools for mainstreaming DEI across the humanitarian program cycle (needs assessment, planning, implementation, and monitoring). We will have room for questions and/or a brief debate with participants at the end of the presentation.

Structure:

  1. Introduction: Why DEI matters in development and in humanitarian settings
  2. Key concepts: Defining diversity, equity, inclusion, and intersectionality
  3. Equity vs. Equality: Understanding the differences and their operational implications
  4. DEI in the Humanitarian Program Cycle: Practical strategies for integration
  5. Case studies: example of a refugee camp where single women and persons with disabilities lacked equitable access to food, example of how development programs can reinforce inequalities if intersectionality is not considered, example of successful inclusion strategies in emergency response.
  6. Discussion and Questions: Space for participants to share insights and challenges
